Needles

• One 16" circular each size US 9 and 101⁄2 (5.5 and 6.5 mm)

• One set of double pointed needles (dpn) size US 101⁄2 (6.5 mm) Or size to obtain gauge

• Stitch Markers (2 of one color, 1 of another for beg-of-rnd)

• Two cable needles (cn)

• Pom-pom maker—see tutorial for how to make your own:

GAUGE:

16 sts and 24 rows = 4" in Circular Stockinette Stitch (St st) with larger needles.

Take time to save time, check your gauge.

SPECIAL TERMS:

p2tog: Purl 2 sts together (1 st decreased).

k2tog: Knit 2 sts together (1 st decreased).

PATTERN STITCHES:

Circular 1 x 1 Rib: (multiple of 2 sts)

Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * around

Rnd 2: Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts as they face you.

Rep Rnd 2 for 1 x 1 Rib.

Circular Stockinette Stitch (St st): Knit every rnd.

Cable Panel: (multiple of 17 sts)

Rnds 1– 8: P4, k9, p4.

Rnd 9: P4, slip 3 to cn and hold in back, slip next 3 to cn and hold in front; k3; k3 from second cn; k3 from first cn, p4.

Rnds 10 –16: P4, k9, p4.

Rep Rnds 1–16 for Cable Panel.

HAT

With smaller circular needle, CO 76 sts;

place marker (pm) for beg-of-rnd.

Join to beg working in-the-rnd, being careful not to twist sts.

Begin Circular 1 x 1 Rib; work even until pc meas 1" from beg.

Change to larger needles and Est Cable Panel:

Work 13 sts in St st, pm, work 17 sts in Cable Panel, pm, work to end in St st.

Continue working sts outside the markers in St st and sts inside the marker in Cable Panel, work Rnds 1–16 two times,

then work Rnds 1– 14 once more, end after Rnd 14.

Shape

Crown:

Change to dpns when necessary.

Remove Cable Panel markers.

Dec Rnd 1:

[K2, k2tog] 3 times, k1, p1, p2tog, p1, k1, [k2tog, k2] 2 times, p2tog, p2, k1, [k2tog, k2] 11 times, k1—58 sts rem.

Work 1 rnd even as est.

Dec Rnd 3:

[K1, k2tog] 3 times, k1, p2tog, p1, [k2tog, k1] 2 times, p2tog, p1, k2tog, [k1, k2tog] 11 times, k1—39 sts rem. Dec Rnd 3: *K2tog, rep from * to last st, k1—20 sts rem.

Dec Rnd 4:

*K2tog, rep from * around—10 sts rem. Rep dec rnd 4 once more—5 sts rem.

Break yarn leaving approx. 8" tail.

Pull tail through rem sts 2 times tightly.

FINISHING

Block pc to measurement.

Using a pom-pom maker, make a 4" pom-pom using up the remainder of the second ball of yarn.

Sew the pom-pom to the top of the hat.
